Bangladesh premier League (BPL)

The Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) is a professional Twenty20 cricket league in Bangladesh. The league was formed in 2012 by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and has since become one of the most popular T20 leagues in the world. The BPL consists of seven teams representing different cities in Bangladesh and attracts some of the world's best T20 cricketers. In this blog post, we will delve deeper into the history of the BPL, its structure, and its impact on Bangladeshi cricket.

History of BPL

The idea of a professional T20 league in Bangladesh was first proposed in 2010 by the then BCB president, Mustafa Kamal. Kamal wanted to create a league that would provide a platform for young Bangladeshi cricketers to showcase their skills and also attract international players to play in Bangladesh. The BCB initially partnered with a private company, Game On Sports, to launch the league, but the partnership ended in controversy and legal disputes.

The BPL finally launched in 2012 under the direct supervision of the BCB. The inaugural season of the BPL featured six teams representing different cities in Bangladesh. The teams were

Barisal Burners

Chittagong Kings,

Dhaka Gladiators,

Duronto Rajshahi,

Khulna Royal Bengals,

and

Rangpur Riders.

The Dhaka Gladiators won the first BPL title, beating the Barisal Burners in the final.

Since then, the BPL has gone through several changes in ownership and format. In 2015, the league was briefly suspended due to financial irregularities and was relaunched in 2016 under a new management team. The league was restructured to feature seven teams instead of six, and the team names were changed. The teams for the 2016 season were Barisal Bulls, Chittagong Vikings, Comilla Victorians, Dhaka Dynamites, Khulna Titans, Rajshahi Kings, and Rangpur Riders. The Dhaka Dynamites (formerly Dhaka Gladiators) have been the most successful team in the BPL, winning the title four times.

Structure of BPL

The BPL is a franchise-based T20 league, meaning that each team is owned by a franchise that pays a fee to the BCB for the right to own and operate a team in the league. The franchise owners are responsible for assembling their team and managing its operations, including player recruitment, team selection, and coaching.

The BPL is played in a round-robin format, where each team plays against the other teams twice. The top four teams in the league table qualify for the playoffs, which consist of two semi-finals and a final. The winner of the final is crowned the BPL champion.

The BPL has attracted some of the world's best T20 cricketers over the years. Players like Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, Kumar Sangakkara, and Andre Russell have all played in the league. The BPL has also provided a platform for young Bangladeshi cricketers to showcase their skills and earn a place in the national team.
